Story: Condemned Man Refuses Pardon – Dies on Gallows
In Pennsylvania in 1829,
George Wilson was convicted of mail robbery and murder,
and was sentenced to death. Although pardoned
by President Andrew Jackson, Wilson refused the pardon. What
were they to do with a man who refused a pardon and chose to die
on the gallows instead?
This unusual case went to
the US Supreme Court for a determination. Chief Supreme
Court Justice John Marshall ruled: "A pardon…
depends upon its acceptance by the parties implicated…
if it is refused, it is no pardon. George Wilson must hang."
A few weeks later, Wilson walked up thirteen steps.
A black hood was placed over his head and a rope around
his neck. His body fell, and Wilson was dead! Why?
Because he refused the pardon. True story!
My Story . . .
I’ve lied, stolen, cheated, thought hateful selfish immoral
thoughts; I’ve done what was wrong when I knew what
was right, and therefore have voluntarily broken relationship
with God! I’ve “missed the target” again
and again, and am a sinner in need of a Savior. I am in
need of a Divine pardon!
How about you?
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans
But God loves each one of us so much that He gave
His Son to die for our sins: But God demonstrates His own
love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died
for us. (Romans 5:8)
Death means separation from God forever. Eternal
life comes by trusting Jesus Christ: For the wages of sin
is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus
our Lord. (Rom. 6:23)
Jesus Christ lovingly receives and welcomes all
who come to Him. If you confess with your mouth the Lord
Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the
dead, you will be saved… for, whoever calls
on the name of the LORD shall be saved (Rom. 10:9, 13)
Bad news: "religions”
are man-made attempts to “reach” a distant, un-knowable
god. Good news: Jesus
Christ offers living relationship instead, where we know we’re
saved by grace and declared “right” in God’s
sight by faith in Jesus!
So, how does one receive Christ? Simply
pray the following prayer from your heart:
Lord Jesus, I need You. Thank You for dying on the cross
for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You
as my Savior and my Lord. Come into my heart and lead my
life. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal
life. Help me to draw near to You through daily prayer and
Bible reading, to become more like You, and to enjoy consistent
time together with those who truly love You.
I ask these things in Your Name Lord Jesus, Amen.
Walking with Jesus is not a “religion.”
It’s about restored relationship with God that is full of
love, hope, peace, joy, liberty, certainty, and purpose! It is
an exciting adventure that involves •feeding the hungry,
•healing the sick, and •making a significant
positive difference in our world by serving others as Jesus did.
Will you receive the “Divine pardon” today?
Please let me know if you’d like
me to freely send you a:
2) short book providing
evidence of Jesus’ Divinity, or
3) short book about how to walk with Jesus.
I’m glad to pray for you,
or with you, or serve you any way I can.
