What God’s Word Says About Prayer
God’s word assures us that the effective, fervent prayer of the righteous avails much (Js. 5:16).  We’re instructed to pray without ceasing (I Thess. 5:17).  Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Heb. 4:16).  On a national level, His word tells us that if we who are called by His name will humble ourselves, and pray and seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways, then He will hear from heaven, and will forgive our sin and heal our land (II Chr. 7:14).  He also exhorts us to pray for our leaders (I Tim. 2:1-2).

Notable Presidential Prayer Proclamations…
President George Washington called for a day of prayer:  “Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknow-ledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have requested me to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer… I do assign… the 26th day of November [1789]… that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks…
President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation to “set apart a day [April 30, 1789] for national prayer and humiliation (fasting)… to confess our national sins and to pray for clemency and forgiveness…”
